Cosmetic Procedures Explained
Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure used for gummy smile correction. A “gummy smile” is a term used to describe excessive gum tissue that shows above the teeth when smiling.
At least 2 millimeters of excess gum must be showing to be diagnosed as gummy smile. Some people are born with dental irregularities that cause this condition, while others have problems with incorrect tooth eruption that creates a gummy smile later in life.
Crown lengthening involves contouring the gum tissue and bone to expose the healthy tooth. This procedure can be performed on one tooth or the entire gum line.
Reasons to choose a crown lengthening procedure include:

- Providing more adequate space for natural tooth placement
Tissue grafting is a procedure that addresses the opposite problem. It is used when patients don’t have adequate gum tissue. Aging and/or periodontal disease can cause gums to recede.

The four types of tissue restoration performed by Dr. Haque are:
- Allograft Matrix: Uses donated human tissue as the grafting material
- Subepithelial Connective Tissue Graft: Uses a small flap from the mouth palate as tissue for the graft
- Pedicle Graft: Uses a flap of existing gum tissue from the same area and moving it laterally where needed
- Gingival Graft: Uses a strip of gum tissue from a different area of the mouth
